Why Creative Facebook Page Names don’t always Work
If you have recently started a Facebook page – I encourage you to check your page name. This is the title of your page, not your username (which is your unique Facebook link if you have created one). I want you to think about the words in the name as you read this info.
Recently I have come across a couple pages that I could not find in a Facebook search. Yes, there are some limitations to Facebook’s search function, but part of the reason was because they were named according to the branding.
This can be fine to keep things matching on all areas of your web presence, but when you do this you risk making your page harder to find.
How can it be harder to find?
If you use something like a “!” symbol in your name (say for the letter “L”, don’t use it like this on Facebook. Write out the word properly. In most cases when Jane or John Doe is searching for your business on Facebook, they will not be using your branding symbols – they will type out the word / name properly. ie. If your brand name is Pi!ates most people would type it as Pilates.
Just because your branded name is spelled as one word, if your common customer or potential one will use two words – think about that before creating the Facebook Business Page name. You can change your page name title until you hit 100 Likes on the Page… so if you think you should make a change, do it before the page gets too popular.
My Facebook Page name has a little typo in it, but once I realized this I already had too many people connected and did not want to start over (the only option sometimes) building my community on Facebook. My Page name title is “Time on Task Va Services” – It should be a capital “a” in VA, but I did not notice until it was too late. Actually it should also have the words virtual assistant and social media (two of my top two keywords) in there too… sometimes starting over is not the best option and going with a mistake works. For me it works because my online identity is ‘timeontaskva’ so this is not too far off – if it were, I probably would have started over.
You can always add your brand images to a custom landing page or to your side profile image on the Page – but keep the name title as the proper word. Make it easier for people to find you online.
A few more tips on Facebook Page names :
- Don’t forget to add in your main keywords (if it makes sense and does not fill up your page name with too many characters)
- Your Page name can be something you keep for a long time so don’t forget to look to the future when you create it. (The best example of this is a real estate agent. People move from one agency to another – if you have your company name in the page name and start working for another one, you will not be able to continue to use the community you built. Starting over will be a must. And getting people to come and like the new page is as hard as getting people to opt in to your new email marketing system.
- Once your username is booked. (ie www.facebook.com/timeontaskva) that cannot be changed.
If you are unsure if what you have setup for your business page is a good name or not, post a comment here with a link to your page, and I will give you my opinion.
