Facebook Pages will change if you use Boxes
Last October I posted a note about the upcoming changes happening to Facebook Pages; specifically the Boxes tabs and the width of tabs in general. In essence, Facebook is removing boxes altogether and Tabs will lose some width.
Back then it was going to happen in a “few weeks or months”, but the time has come that Facebook has finally announced a date on the change – August 23rd.
They have just announced that people using boxes will get messages that the changes will be happening and to fix/edit your setup if you (like many in the beginning stages of Facebook Fanpages) are using the Boxes feature.
My advice?
Make your changes now so funky things don’t happen in two weeks. Of course I tend to be a planner
How?
- If you are using a Box tab then you should really convert that into one Static FBML tab and encompass all the boxes information into one tab. Watch for the width in your design as the limit is going to be 520 pixels wide now. If you had a tab with FBML code in it and the design created was wider than 520 you can keep the same application but you will have to change the width in there as well.
- If you are someone who had a Facebook Landing Page or boxes created for you, then you will probably have to get that designer – or someone else – to fix the setup so that visitors will be able see all of your Landing Page information properly.
This will probably cause many people some issues in trying to get their Facebook setup fixed to conform and fit into these changes; which really brings me back to the warning that I always discus with new clients – Social Media Marketing is great and can be a fabulous boon to your business, but you always need your own foundations in place. The foundations being your website and blog – items on the internet that you control; your online real estate.
All of the social media platforms we use and rely on, are controlled by the business that owns them. When they choose to make changes such as this one, there is not much you can do but play along and make the necessary changes.
