Not Everyone Follows the Same Rules on Twitter
In all my social media training sessions… I always add in a slide or talk about how Twitter is really a place where you can make Connections, but should not have any expectations on how other people will network with you. It is something I teach primarily because everyone has different reasons for being ‘on Twitter’. Just because you would do one action doesn’t mean others will do the same.
Connections without Expectations
Your reasons for networking with Twitter will really dictate how you behave. The strategy you have in place, whether a formal one or not will guide your actions. How you tweet, how you find and follow other people, whether you send auto welcome Direct Messages or not. Some businesses may use twitter and never once post an update about their services. Some people will post too many. Some people will follow everyone back, some will not.
You cannot expect every on this very fast acting social network to behave exactly as you do. If you place your expectations at this level… you will get cranky, you will get ticked off when people don’t do what you would.
They will not always act the way you expect them to. Their reasons and ways of using Twitter are different. If you go into this realm of social media with expectations like this – you will be disappointed and you will take what can be a great networking venue and make it a place where you are not enjoying yourself.
Get rid of these expectations! Do what works for you and network and talk with others as you can. The connecting is what is important, make that part work in the best way possible, understanding that we all are using this social media marketing platform for different reasons and in different ways.
How do you deal with situations where you know that is not how you would do it? Do you tell the other person they should be, do you let it go – more importantly do you let it get to you?
