Twitter and Passwords

twitter social networking virtual assistantWhen using applications you are using that require your twitter username and password, you must remember to keep things up to date.  If an application requires your password for use on a regular basis and you change your twitter password, you have to remember to change the password on these external applications as well. Two prime examples are Tweetdeck and Tweetlater.

I  learned the hard way with  Tweetdeck  a few months ago when I changed my password.  I was locked out of my Tweetdeck account.

Follow this process to keep everything running smooth:

  1. If you plan to change your twitter password and use Tweetdeck, sign out of Tweetdeck first.
  2. Go to Twitter – sign in and change your twitter password.
  3. Open Tweetdeck again and use your new password to sign in.

Tweetlater is another tool/application I use for my clients and myself, that allows for automated messages among other features. No matter what your opinion on the auto messages (and there are many), they are available to use and many do, and not just for the welcome – type message.

Tweetlater also requires your username and password, so even though you may have set up a bunch of auto tweets to go out for a month – check it once a week to make sure they are being published. That password change will stop some of them from being published and you don’t even realize it.

The key is to keep track of what services you use that require authentication and when you change the password, change them all.  For security reasons, it is good practice to change your password monthly, a good practice with any password really.

Hope these tips help you manage your social media a bit more effectively.
