“Senakulo” is a traditional theatrical presentation held during Lenten season in the Philippines. It is a dramatic presentation depicting the Passion of Jesus Christ: his trial, suffering and death. The word “Senakulo” was derived from the word Cenacle or the “Upper Room” which is the term used for the site of “The Last Supper”. These passion plays are staple rituals and still being practiced in many provinces in the country during the Lenten season.
In Boac, Marinduque the “Senakulo” is one of the much-awaited Lenten traditions that is held at the Moriones Arena in Boac Riverside. Presented with great actors, awesome lights, sounds, costumes and set design, it is definitely an impressive dramatization of the events that happened to Jesus Christ before His death.
We got to watch the Holy Thursday Senakulo during Moriones Festival 2016. We were happy and delighted to witness great performances of the “Senakulo” actors playing different biblical characters. Here are some of the photos.
