Four days after my Solo Northern Mindanao Adventure, I was again on the road to explore a province that is not frequented by tourists. It was a quick solo trip but I was able to enjoy a beach and become acquainted with what and how a provincial city life is. Masbate is a province south of Manila and is located in the Bicol Region. It’s capital is Masbate city and consists of three major islands, namely Masbate, Ticao and Burias.
It was already lunch time when I reached Masbate City. From the airport, I took a tricycle to the city proper (10 PHP) and checked-in at Sampaguita Tourist Inn (275 PHP per night) along Quezon St., in downtown Masbate City.
After I have settled my things, I hired a tricycle outside the hostel and asked the driver to bring me to Bituon Beach in the nearby town of Mobo. I asked him how much would it cost and I am so lucky to get it for just 150 PHP, to and from the beach plus the waiting time. Note: Be sure to ask first for the price before going so as not to encounter any problems along the way.
Hiring a tricycle would be the best way to get there as it is not along the national road. It would require approximately 10 minutes of navigating through a dirt road before reaching the resort. In total, it’s about 13 kilometers away form Masbate City and it took us around 40 minutes to reach the beach.
Bituon beach is popularly known as “Star of Masbate”. It is a 90 hectare privately-owned property surrounded with coconut trees, ferns, bamboos, mahogany and acacia trees.
There are individually built cottages (100 – 200 PHP per day) made from local materials dotted along it’s shoreline. It also has a kilometer long of “not-so white” sand beach (read: subjective) with a picturesque view of a hill decorated by tropical vegetation.
Beach volleyball, basketball, bowling, lawn tennis and some water sports are also available for the guests’ delight.
If you plan to stay overnight, they have room accommodations (1,000 to 1,800 PHP per night) with air conditioning, private toilet and bath, television with cable, refrigerator, kitchen plus an outdoor swimming pool. Entrance fee is 50 PHP for adults and 30 PHP for children.
It may not be the best beach I’ve been to, but still the water is clear and it’s so refreshing to swim as the lush greens around is so relaxing.
It’s a nice venue for family gatherings; ideal for weekenders, honey-mooners and adventurers, a perfect place to relax or celebrate a special occasion.
